"The February sky outside the window looked like snow, but the conference room was stultifying. The faux wood grain of the table stood out against the glare of the fluorescent lights. Rose studied a pattern of wavy streaks in front of her as fragments of phrases sifted and drifted past. She struggled to keep nervousness at bay. At thirty-two she was not the youngest among the probationary faculty, but in her business-casual blazers and too-new Levis she felt unsophisticated amid the worldly, polyglot group. Nor had she found time to learn otherwise, since she had devoted every spare hour she wasn’t preparing her Ancient Egypt survey to writing the paper she would read in this overheated room next week."
