Internship at Sonoma International Film Festival Leads to an Opportunity with Noted Hollywood Producer for HSSA Student Mikaela McNeely
By Rebecca Hampton
Cinematic Arts and Technology major Mikaela McNeely has always had her sights set on the film industry. When it came time to choose a college, Sonoma State University’s internship opportunities—particularly its partnership with the Sonoma International Film Festival (SIFF)—played a major role in her decision. After years of passion and preparation, McNeely’s goals came to life through a hands-on internship with SIFF’s programming team.
The opportunity came by way of an email from the HSSA internship coordinator about available internship positions at the festival. McNeely knew immediately that programming would be a perfect fit. Though this was her first film-related internship, excitement far outweighed any nerves about stepping into a professional environment for the first time.
SIFF is a celebrated annual event that showcases independent films from around the globe and provides valuable networking opportunities for students and professionals alike. As part of the programming team, McNeely gained a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to produce a world-class festival—from film evaluation to logistical planning.
Her early responsibilities included reviewing submissions on FilmFreeway, writing detailed synopses, highlighting notable actors, and helping assess which films best matched the festival’s vision. She also became proficient in Airtable, using it to organize credits, poster images, and other assets that fed into the official festival program.
Reflecting on her experience, McNeely noted how much goes into festival planning months before the event ever begins.
“What really surprised me was how much work is done far in advance,” she said. “You don’t realize just how early everything has to come together until you’re right in the middle of it. The pace can be hectic—but also incredibly exciting.”
During the festival itself, McNeely hosted 12 filmmaker Q&A sessions—each one a unique experience depending on the director’s style and personality. These moments helped her grow more confident with public speaking and navigating live events.
Working closely with a supportive group of SIFF staff members and guided by her supervisor, McNeely felt like more than just a student intern.
“They really treated me as part of the team,” she said. “I got to contribute meaningfully, and that built up my confidence in both my analytical skills and my ability to be part of professional conversations.”
A major highlight of her experience was connecting with veteran Hollywood film producer Juliet Berman—a relationship that led to a summer internship opportunity. With a strong interest in independent films, McNeely hopes to work in film development after graduation, ideally starting as a film development assistant. Her relationship with Berman, whose credits include Set Up starring Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch.
“I’m still learning and growing, but this experience made me realize I can find my place in this industry,” she said. “It gave me a clearer idea of the kind of work that excites me—and it made my dreams for the future feel a lot more real.”
Beyond technical experience, McNeely emphasized the importance of taking initiative, especially for students just getting started.
“Be bold,” she advised. “Don’t be afraid to reach out, show up to meetings, and ask for opportunities. Even if it’s intimidating, the more you put yourself out there, the more doors open.”
Now on track to graduate a semester early, McNeely’s future looks bright. With a love for film history, a growing foundation in festival programming, and a newfound confidence in her professional journey, she’s ready for what comes next—a path that will no doubt keep her close to the world of independent film.
One thing is clear: Mikaela McNeely’s time with SIFF wasn’t just another college experience. It was a major milestone on the path to a lifelong dream.
