Stop by Stevenson 3900 from 12-1pm on November 12th to hear Teresa Nguyen's lecture: Parenting, Partnership, and Culture.
Summary:
Families thrive when parents are happy in their marriages and with their spouse’s parenting. Yet much of what we know about these dynamics comes from predominantly White, middle-class families and reflects Euro-American ideals emphasizing individual goals and autonomy. Drawing on interviews with 74 Latiné couples (148 individuals), my students and I examined how acculturation—the process of adapting to a new culture while maintaining aspects of one’s heritage culture—shapes the connection between parenting and marital satisfaction. We found that satisfaction with a partner’s parenting is more strongly tied to marital satisfaction among less acculturated Latiné spouses, suggesting that cultural values may shape how closely couples connect their parenting and marital relationships.
The Brown Bag Lecture Series is an opportunity for faculty from all across HSSA to share their recent research and publications with students, faculty, and staff from all different disciplines. This series is always free and open to anyone in the campus community.
