Stop by Stevension 3900 from 1-2pm on September 15th to hear Thomas Robinson's lecture: Beyond the Classroom: A Self-Guided Natural Hazards Driving Tour Designed for Classes Too Large to Take Outside

Summary:

This talk presents the design and development of a web-based, self-guided natural hazards driving tour of Sonoma and Marin counties, created as a companion resource to GEP 351: Natural Hazards. Funded by a Dean's Summer Research Grant, the project addresses a core challenge in large-enrollment field-based courses: how do you get 50 students into the landscape without a motorcoach, a field day, and a liability waiver? One solution involves ArcGIS StoryMaps, a Survey123 nomination form, two county emergency management offices, a lot of driving and exploring(!), and some hard thinking about what students actually need to build genuine hazard literacy. The talk will cover the project's pedagogical goals, the guest-lecturers-turned-community-partners who shaped site selection, the key design decisions and their tradeoffs, and what a self-guided tour can and cannot do for student learning.
