The Feet in the Mud workshop series start Mondays at 4 -5:30 PM: April 13, April 20, & April 27
This workshop series, led and facilitated by Professor Chingling Wo (Sonoma State University, English Department), explores Chinese migration, labor, and exclusion through historical documents, newspapers, and census records. Participants will engage in mini-lectures, hands-on activities, and group discussions that aim to humanize Chinese immigrants beyond reductive racialized narratives. Local teachers interested in teaching the history of Chinese laborers in Petaluma are especially encouraged to attend.
Workshop 2 (April 207)—Reading Newspapers of Chinese Expulsion, 1850–1890
Participants will read and discuss historical newspapers to examine how racism was normalized and circulated in public discourse, and how these sources can be critically interpreted today.
Free and open to the public.
Educators, students, and community members are welcome.
