Women's & Gender Studies Teach-Out Advising Plan

Advising for Women's & Gender Studies Majors

WGS majors will be given priority registration for Spring 2026 and are strongly encouraged to register during the priority period. Review your ARR before registration begins. If you have questions about what to take, please meet with your faculty advisor, Professor Charlene Tung ([email protected]) early. Additional course options will become available for Spring 2026 through CSU Fully Online and enrollment dates for Spring 2026 will be provided when they become available. Consult with Professor Charlene Tung before registering for CSU Fully Online courses you plan to count toward your WGS major.

  • Complete upper-division WGS core courses when offered at SSU during the AY25/26 WGS teach-out (see below) or during Summer 2025 (see below).
  • If you need WGS 200, complete a lower-division Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies class through CSU Fully Online or at a CA Community College.
  • If you need WGS 201 or 202, complete WGS 201 when offered at SSU during the AY25/26 WGS teach-out.
  • If needed, take 4 units of electives from the list on your ARR, or from either the COCL Pathway or CUCR Pathway you are not using for your pathway requirement.
  • Complete the required number of WGS 499 (Internship) units. Please contact Hillary Homzie ([email protected]), the WGS Internship Coordinator for help locating an internship or with any questions.

Advising for the Community/Clinical Pathway

Complete 12 units of coursework from the COCL Pathway. Courses offered through other departments may be taken in 2025-2026 or 2026-2027.

Advising for the Cultural/Critical Pathway

Complete 12 units of coursework from the CUCR Pathway. Courses offered through other departments may be taken in 2025-2026 or 2026-2027.

Advising for Women's & Gender Studies Minors

WGS minors who can complete 16 units of minor coursework during the teach-out will receive their WGS minor

Advising for Queer Studies Minors

QS minors who can complete 18 units of minor coursework during the teach-out will receive their QS minor

WGS 200 Introduction to Women’s & Gender Studies

Explores social, political, and cultural dimensions of gender in society and culture. This course foregrounds intersectional feminist analyses: how gender is co-constituted with race, sexuality, nation, ability, economy, and other forms of social power. Students learn about the field of WGS, feminist analysis, interdisciplinary methods, and social justice

WGS 85 (Sacramento) Intro to Women’s & Gender Studies 

Introduction to major topics and issues within feminism. Using interdisciplinary and intersectional perspectives, the course will examine issues in women's and gender studies across the globe. Feminist methods and approaches will be examined using classic and contemporary texts. Topics include intersectionality, LGBTQ studies, domestic violence, reproductive justice, beauty standards, disability, and globalization. General Education Area/Graduation Requirement: GE AREA D.

WGSS 2000 (Cal State LA) Intro to WGSS

Survey of key concepts in the field and exploration of the concepts of sex, gender, gender identity, and sexuality and their intersections with race, class, ability, and immigration status

WGS 255 Introduction to Queer Studies

This interdisciplinary course offers an introduction to the field of Queer Studies by analyzing the role of race, gender, sexuality, and nationalism in the social construction of modern gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (GLBTQ) identities. Students also learn of queer theoretical approaches to politics, culture, and society
 

QS 101 (Northridge) Intro Queer Studies

Provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Queer Studies, which aims to problematize rigid identity categories and destabilize essentialized norms of expression. The course will cover the history of how concepts such as gender and desire have been understood and articulated; heteronormativity and its relationship to capitalism, race, and gender roles; queer aesthetics; and queer strategies and tactics of resistance. 

WGS 300 Gender, Race and Representation

Students in this course will explore representations in media and art using intersectional feminist and cultural studies theories and methods. Tracing the production of difference through culture, we foreground the study of gender, race and representation as a method through which to understand and transform the social world.

JOUR 371 (Northridge) Gender & Media

Examines media representation of gender and sexual identity and ways in which the media culture shapes gender roles, expectations, and stereotypes. Particular emphasis on applying critical thinking, research and writing skills to analyze gendered portrayals, policies and practices in television, film, magazines, music, video games, news, advertising, and social media, and to develop strategies that empower gender equality in society. Special attention to historical and contemporary contributions and responsibilities of women media professionals.

WGS 455 Queer & Trans Theory & Lives 

This advanced interdisciplinary course explores historical and contemporary queer and transgender theory to better engage with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender culture, lives, and politics. Particular focus is given to intersecting analyses of race, class, ability, nation, and other forms of social power

GSS 4500 (San Bernardino) Queer Theory

An interdisciplinary exploration of queer theory through examining vital theoretical texts, intellectual traditions, and research while exploring the implications and applications of queer theory across multiple contexts domestically and globally. The course will provide students with a conceptual framework to critically analyze how gender and sexuality relate to social justice within changing historical and cultural contexts.

WGSS 416 (Long Beach) Queering Gender 

Explores intellectual debates in the emergent field of queer theory, particularly as it connects to women’s experiences and the politics of gender. Focuses on the intervention that queer theory seeks to make into heteronormative culture on all levels of social life.

GSS 10 (Saddleback College): Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies (online)

An exploration of the core concepts of gender, sexuality, and women's studies focusing on gender and sexuality as social constructs that impact social institutions, cultural practices and the lives of women, men, and non-binary people. Emphasis is on how differences of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, ability, nationality, and age have historically defined and continue to define gendered experiences and identities.

WGST 25 (City College SF): Introduction to Women’s & Gender Studies (online and face to face)

Introduction to the origins, purpose, subject matter, and methods of Women's and Gender Studies and to feminist perspectives on a range of social issues affecting women of diverse backgrounds. Study of the formation of gender and its intersections with race, class, sexuality, dis/ability, age, religion, and other systems of difference.

This interdisciplinary course offers an introduction to the field of Queer Studies by analyzing the role of race, gender, sexuality, and nationalism in the social construction of modern gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (GLBTQ) identities. Students also learn of queer theoretical approaches to politics, culture, and society.

GSS 15 (Saddleback College): Introduction to Queer Studies (online)

Examines how and why certain expressions of sexuality and gender identity are viewed as 'normal' while others are defined as 'deviant.' Explores how politics, cultural practices, social institutions, science, and religion have created and maintain queerphobia. Analyzes how race, class, nationality, and ability intersect with gender and sexuality to construct a person's identity and life experiences. Explores queer activism.
