Psychology/CCJS Professors Publish "How to Improve Group Affirmation Manipulations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis."

Heather Smith (Psychology) and Diana Grant (CCJS) recently published a systematic review of group affirmation experiments in the peer reviewed journal, Group Processes and Intergroup Relations

Researchers often ask participants to affirm positive aspects or shared values for a group important to them (a group affirmation manipulation) in order to encourage healthy behavior, acknowledge historical harm, accept group-based criticism, or diffuse the impact of social exclusion. With the help of undergraduate students (funded by SSURI and the Dean's Summer Stipends), they coded the design and results of 922 experiments to identify when affirming one's group membership will increase group-based favoritism or when it will decrease group-based defensiveness.
