New Publication from Wenwen Ni, Professor of Psychology
New article published by Professor Wenwen Ni (Sonoma State University), Professor Bernalyn Ruiz-Yu (UCLA / Boston’s Children’s Hospital) and Professor Emily He (UCSF) considers how interactions between patients and mental health providers may be an important contributor to racial / ethnic disparities in mental health.
For the article, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, Professor Ni and her co-authors conducted a narrative review of empirical studies that examine interactional processes between patients and providers. Social psychological concepts (such as stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination) represented in the studies are summarized and additional frameworks that can help explain how disparities are maintained are proposed. Last of all, practical suggestions for mitigating provider bias during patient–provider interactions are provided.
